Kansas Doves

9/1/14

The Kansas 2014 dove season opened up on 9/1 and Nick, Landon, Jeff and I were ready to get the show started. Nick and I scouted several public fields on Saturday and there were a lot of birds in the area, so we had high expectations going into opening morning. We thought arriving two hours early was going to give us a leg up on other hunters, but we weren't the only ones with that idea. There were close to 20 guys already at the field we'd elected to hunt first. The scouting trip paid off though because most of the guys were on the opposite end of the field that we wanted to hunt. We got to the area we wanted and staked out our spots....by the time legal shooting arrived there had to close to 50 hunters around the field.

The shooting started early and often as birds started buzzing around from all directions. Nicky has on point and limited out after about an hour. I was having a pretty good morning on the trigger also and limited out shortly after that. Landon and Jeff took a little longer and burned up a few more shells, but we ended the morning with 47 doves total. We headed back out that evening and Landon and Jeff finished off their 15 bird limits. It was a great start to the 2014 fall season, now bring on the whitetail...we have several good deer showing up on the farms so it should be an interesting fall!

KS Doves

9/6/12 -  I headed over to Topeka, Kansas to get the fall 2012 hunting season started last week. Nick Bales and I planned to hunt doves around the T-town area for a few days to warm up for the upcoming MN duck/goose hunt in early October.

Nick had done okay throughout the week and was seeing more bird movement in the evenings. This was my first official dove hunt, so I was pretty excited to give it a shake. We setup looking over a cut sunflower field and the action started almost immediately. I had two doves work in and dropped a double on my first two shots...Nick was impressed! The action on the first evening was steady and we ended up with 7 doves total. Nick made one of the more impressive shots I've seen, when he dropped a bird at +60yrds; it made my 50 yarder look easy.

The action the next morning was pretty slow, but that might have had more to do with Nick's birthday celebration the previous night. We managed to knock down four more birds over a couple hours and then headed to one of Nick's deer properties to set up a youth blind.

It was fun shooting and I'm planning to do a lot more of it in the coming years, thanks again Nick!
